Seeding and Pairings in the Single-Elimination Rounds:

The up-to-16 players who advance to the single-elimination rounds will be seeded, with one overall seeding that includes players from both divisions. Again, in the single-elimination rounds, players in the two divisions will be paired against each other to the extent possible. Eventually, depending on the number of players in each division who advance, players in the two divisions will be paired to play each other; if it does not occur before the finals, then the finals would become a game between the winner of the two divisions.

Seeding among the players who advance to the single elimination rounds will be based on the following criteria (in this order):

1. Number of wins
2. Number of rounds played
3. Head-to-head competition
4. Strength of opposition by AREA rating
5. Winners of last preliminary round
6. Strength of opposition within tournament
7. Die roll or a coin flip

For purposes of the seeding and breaking ties, head-to-head competition will be measured by the won-loss percentage in games among the otherwise equally-ranked players, with no games played as such counting as a zero winning percentage. The measure of strength of opposition by AREA rating will be the average AREA rating of the player's opponents as of the start of the tournament. If needed, a second strength of opposition measure, the strength of opposition within the tournament, will be measured by the won-loss percentage of the player's opponents in the tournament.

Byes will be provided to players with the highest seedings if fewer than 16 people advance to the Round of 16. Whether the byes go first to someone in the PBEM or live division depends on the number of players advancing in each division. In order to keep the games played within each division as long as possible, the first bye will go to the highest seeded player in the division with an odd number of players in the round. If both divisions have an odd number of players in the round, then the highest seeded players in each division would qualify for the byes. If both divisions have an even number of players in the round, then the byes would be provided to the highest seeded players in tournament. For example, if 14 players qualify for the Round of 16, then 2 players receive byes. If 7 players are from each division, then the top-seeded player in each division receives a bye. If, alternatively, 8 players are from one division and 6 are from the other, then the top two overall seeded players would receive byes. As another example, if there are 15 players overall in the round of 16, then the top-seeded player in the division with an odd number of players in the round would receive the bye.

Match-ups will be based on the following except that allowances will be made to keep players playing others in the same division to the extent possible.

Round of 16:
Game 1: No. 1 seed vs. No. 16 seed
Game 2: No. 2 seed vs. No. 15 seed
Game 3: No. 3 seed vs. No. 14 seed
Game 4: No.4 seed vs. No. 13 seed
Game 5: No.5 seed vs. No. 12 seed
Game 6: No.6 seed vs. No. 11 seed
Game 7: No.7 seed vs. No. 10 seed
Game 8: No.8 seed vs. No. 9 seed

We will begin the pairings from the bottom. For example, the 16th seeded player will play the highest rated player in the same division. Then the 15th seeded player will likewise play the highest seeded remaining player in the same division. At some point,  one pairing may need to be made with players in different divisions.

For the quarterfinals, the winners of the above eight games will be seeded in the same order used for the round of 16, and the same allowance to keep players playing those in the same division will be used. Eventually in the single-elimination portion of the tournament, in the finals or earlier, the divisions will be merged and some pairings will be outside of a player's division.

Quarterfinals:
Game 1: No. 1 seed vs. No. 8 seed
Game 2: No. 4 seed vs. No. 5 seed
Game 3: No. 3 seed vs. No. 6 seed
Game 4: No. 2 seed vs. No. 7 seed

Semifinals:
Game 1: No 1 seed vs. No. 4 seed
Game 2: No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed

Again, if those semifinal pairings could be altered to instead have both pairings contain players from the same division, that will be done.

Finals: Semifinal winners

If the divisions have not been merged before the finals, then the finals will feature the winners of the two divisions.
